4 curly-girl approved gels that will define and add shine

Updated: Feb 3, 2023

Whether your hair is wavy, curly or coily, chances are - you love a good hair gel.

Not only are gels fantastic for defining and holding your your waves, curls or coils, but they'll also help to protect your hair from humidity, reduce frizz (win-win!), and - with the right products - add a good kick of hydration and shine to your locks.

If you're in the market for a shine-inducing, curly-girl friendly gel for your textured hair - look no further!

We've rounded up 4 of our favourite products below.

1. Rëzo Curl Define Hair Gel

Why we love it:

This gel is ultra-moisturising - so it's just what the doctor ordered for curls in need for extra hydration (and a bit of extra shine), while holding and defining your curl.

It's also a flexible and rather light-weight option, meaning it won't weigh your hair down too much - this is particularly good if you have finer hair, or tend to find that heavier gels really take aim at your volume.

Most suitable for:

Rëzo Curl Define Hair Gel can work wonders for waves, curls and coils.

Given it's quite light and flexible, give this a go if you generally have trouble with gels weighing your hair down, or if you're after a weightless, softer finish to your style.

Why we love it:

This is another one of our favourite light-weight gels! This 'holy grail' for many leaves hair soft-to-the-touch, bouncy and with a good amount of shine. It also contains a good protein-kick for when your waves, curls or coils are feeling over-moisturised (read: limp, overly soft, not retaining shape). The key here is that although this gel is mixed with a cream, the protein in the formula means that you may need to layer it on top of a protein-free leave-in conditioner or curl cream for it to really work its magic (particularly if you have thick, coarse, damaged, dry or type 4 hair).

Most suitable for:

Bounce Curl's Light Creme Gel is suitable for waves, curls and coils. We'd recommend trying it if you're after a lighter hold gel, with an added protein boost. Those with waves and curls that are undamaged can first try using the hair gel alone to achieve voluminous waves/curls with a lighter hold. If using the product alone is drying your hair out, try layering it with a curl cream or leave-in underneath. If you've got type 4 hair, we'd recommend first layering this gel with a protein-free leave-in conditioner or curl cream underneath for added moisture (and optimal results)!

Why we love it:

If you're after a light, glazy, organic formula with added oils to seal in moisture, promote bounce and shine, and guard against humidity - this product is your new go-to!

You'll find a lush blend of avocado, coconut and jojoba oils to nourish your tresses, along with shea and coconut butters to boot. Another added bonus? UV protection (which we love) to help protect against the drying effects of all that summer sunshine.

Most suitable for:

Given its super light, glazy finish, this formula is best suited for type 2 and 3 hair (both medium and coarse).

Be sure to separate your hair into small sections to saturate the product in fully.

Why we love it:

If you're looking to reduce shrinkage, and amp up your moisture & definition game, look no further than Aunt Jackie's Don't Shrink Flaxseed Elongating Curling Gel. This protein-spiked formula is a little thicker than the above gels we've looked at, and, when paired with a good curl cream or oil, will help to give dry waves, curls and coils a good stretch.

Most suitable for:

This lush gel is suitable for waves, curls and coils. Given this product intends to stretch out your locks, we'd advise giving it a go if you're looking for a little extra length and a little less shrinkage, all while maintaining moisture and definition! On the other hand, if achieving your bounciest waves, curls or coils is what you're looking for (and especially if you have finer hair), this formula, with its blend of moisturizing conditioners, shea butter, flaxseed and extra virgin olive oil, may weigh your hair down and stretch your pattern out a little more than you'd like.
